The Governing Body and the Porn Industry




It might seem a bit left field, accusing the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses of having anything to do with the porn industry.  After all, this religion is so sexually repressed, it goes as far as to designate what sexual positions are acceptable and which are not.  (Basically missionary is OK if you really have to and all others are Satanic).  However there is a very clear link between the two; just consider the following.

Pornography denigrates women.  Okay, I'm sure some will argue that there are now women in the industry who are fighting the tide, however most pornography is designed to show women as a 'commodity' a thing to use (and abuse) a piece of (ass) rather than a sentient human being.

If you doubt me just listen to a group of men while they are watching porn; the combination of viewing sex whilst in the company of other men, brings out an animalistic and deeply disturbing view of the male psyche.  This makes me sound like I am a dirty old man going to 'specialist' cinemas - I'm not and I don't.  These are experiences I have encountered over the years in mainly male dominated industries, specifically sales environments.

Don't mistake my views as prudish or anti-sex because I am neither, they are just observations over two decades.

(I seem to be having to defend myself a lot in this blog so from now on you make your own mind up but I'm really just a normal, happily married bloke!)

So back to the comparison.  This is the twenty first century and 'educated countries' now treat women and men as equals.  Of course countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Jordan etc will argue that they are educated - you are not!  If you treat women as second class you are simply bigoted, self serving, uneducated fools.

Which is exactly how JW's or more precisely, the Governing Body treat women.

According to the Governing Body women have brains that are ten percent smaller than men which makes them ineligible for headship!  By this logic the sperm whale, which has a brain almost five times bigger than a human male, should be the head of man.  Ridiculous of course but this is a prime example of how the Governing Body show no more respect for women than the porn industry.  They denigrate women, even pointing to the size of their brains rather than the depth of their intelligence.

In pornography the woman is the object that the men use.  It is no different in the JW's.  For decades the women in the Kingdom Halls would regularly be literature servants, lead the field ministry, take the book study meeting and do a range of other tasks because there weren't enough 'brothers'.  Even now they carry out the vast majority of the field service but they cannot teach from the platform, they cannot offer a prayer if a spotty faced thirteen year old baptised boy is in the room.  They cannot serve as elders or on judicial committees even though a woman's perspective would be the perfect counterbalance for a mans. 

The Governing Body point to Jesus admonition on headship but once again they fail (or rather refuse to see) the overall picture.  God used woman as Judges in Israel, he used them to save spies and assassinate enemies.  He even used them to compile books in the bible so if they are equal in the bible why are they not equal in the organisation that claims to be directed by God?

Why are they treated no differently to an abused girl in a porn film?

Aerosmith and Us

I've recently joined an ex-JW Facebook group and some of the people who contribute to it have made me realise just what a journey it is leaving the Organisation.  As you read their experiences and their (often) open-hearted pleas I am constantly reminded that all of them, in some way or another, are echoing my own feelings and experiences. There is a lyric in the wonderful Aerosmith song 'Amazing' that says; Life's a journey not a destination .  It is a sentiment that until recently I never truly understood but now I realise that leaving a religion that has controlled and manipulated you for a lifetime is a journey that never really ends but it can be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling if you allow it to be. What's the point of the Memorial?

It's memorial season again and most of us will get an invite.  To JW's it is viewed as the most important meeting of the year and effectively it is the only celebration that they actively encourage. Witnesses view the memorial as a celebration and as kids growing up in the 'truth' we were taught the significance of the emblems and the importance of the ransom sacrifice.  However, from being a youngster, I have always questioned the whole concept of both the memorial and (apostasy alert) more to the point, the reasoning behind Jesus ransom sacrifice.  Here is the basic premise of the memorial;  It's a formal ceremony that acknowledges the sacrifice of a perfect man, Jesus.
