The Foundation of Sand; Part 1




The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society have a whole raft of rules and regulations that baffle most outsiders and certainly defy logic.  They are able to control and manipulate millions of people - most of whom are intelligent - to such a degree that they are willing to sacrifice their lives rather than disobey their leaders.  

How does the organisation do this?   

In fact it is very simple - they recognise the most basic of human desires and need only convince a person of three basic premises.  Once a person is convinced that those three statements are true the organisation can manipulate and control them indiscriminately.  

So what are those three premises and how do they convince so many people?

The first premise is; This is not the only life.  

How many of us wish that we could change our lives?  Maybe change decisions we made when we were younger to improve our lot?  How many of us fear death and would desperately cling to any hope that we could extend our lives - even indefinitely?  

The second premise is; There is a resurrection for the dead.

Losing a friend, a family member and especially a child in death is the most devastating experience a human can have and it's one we all experience at one point or another.  The prospect of re-establishing a relationship with a dead loved one is a powerful attraction to most of us.

The final premise is; God loves us and he will provide premise one and two as long as we join his chosen religion.

Jehovahs Witnesses use 'the bible promise' of a paradise earth where people will live forever in peace and happiness as the 'bait'.  Who wouldn't want to live in a paradise where no one ever got sick and old?  Who wouldn't want a 'perfect life'?

To make the bait more attractive they claim that all the dead will be resurrected.  Yes, you will be able to be reunited with your dead child, your dead parent or your dead best friend.

And then finally there is the hook;  If you want everlasting life in paradise where you will meet up with your dead loved one you have to join us, otherwise you get nothing.

People join the JW's because they are desperate - they don't want to die, they are desperate for something better than the life they have now and they are desperate for the comfort that death isn't the end.

Once Witnesses convince a person that premise one and two are achievable by obeying three, everything else that they teach is easily swallowed.

They convince people that these three premises are true by manipulating bible texts to appear as though these are promises from God and they alone are Gods chosen people.  In my next blog I will demonstrate how they do this and how they demand loyalty through fear.

Aerosmith and Us

I've recently joined an ex-JW Facebook group and some of the people who contribute to it have made me realise just what a journey it is leaving the Organisation.  As you read their experiences and their (often) open-hearted pleas I am constantly reminded that all of them, in some way or another, are echoing my own feelings and experiences. There is a lyric in the wonderful Aerosmith song 'Amazing' that says; Life's a journey not a destination .  It is a sentiment that until recently I never truly understood but now I realise that leaving a religion that has controlled and manipulated you for a lifetime is a journey that never really ends but it can be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling if you allow it to be. What's the point of the Memorial?

It's memorial season again and most of us will get an invite.  To JW's it is viewed as the most important meeting of the year and effectively it is the only celebration that they actively encourage. Witnesses view the memorial as a celebration and as kids growing up in the 'truth' we were taught the significance of the emblems and the importance of the ransom sacrifice.  However, from being a youngster, I have always questioned the whole concept of both the memorial and (apostasy alert) more to the point, the reasoning behind Jesus ransom sacrifice.  Here is the basic premise of the memorial;  It's a formal ceremony that acknowledges the sacrifice of a perfect man, Jesus.
