Uniforms and Burkas

The majority of my blogs highlight the sinister side of The Watchtower, Bible and Tract Society or as they are better known, Jehovah's Witnesses.

Today I want to concentrate on a lighter - though still ridiculous - set of rules that the Governing Body impose; How to dress.

On each Kingdom Hall notice board is a list of what is and what is not acceptable dress and grooming for a Jehovah's Witness.  I guess the Elders police the policy which will inevitably lead to some embarrassing conversations.

Elder Tactless: "Er hum, sister.  I'm afraid I can see your nipples through your blouse, do you think it is a little tight for wearing to the Kingdom Hall?"

Sister Tease: "Why are you looking at my chest Brother?  Do you want me to tell my husband that you've been staring at my boobs?"

There are even rules regarding hair length for brothers;

Elder Tactless: "Hello Brother, I know you are new in this congregation but I am sure you know the rules on a brothers hair length.  May I suggest that when we see you at the next meeting your hair will be above your shoulder and preferably around your ears as well?"

The Reply: "Hello Brother Tactless, it is nice to meet you.  You will have to excuse the manly looks Jehovah blessed me with, I'm Sister Alice Smith!"

What would they say if Jesus walked into the Kingdom Hall sporting long hair and a beard?

Possibly;  "Yes we know you're the son of God but before you can get on the platform we want to see the beard gone, the hair cut and for Gods sake man, put on some socks!"

There is an old saying in many Christian religions and one I have heard the Governing Body use as well.  It says, if you are not sure ask yourself; What would Jesus Do?

Would Jesus have insisted that a dress code be put up on the noticeboard to ensure every brother had a short, sharp haircut, a bland suit and a tasteless tie?  Would he have formed an Anti-Fashion Police squad to ensure everyone looked like clones of the Governing Body?

I'm pretty sure he would have stroked his thick beard, run his hands through his long, luxurious hair and shaken his head at the pomposity of the people who claimed to be his people.

Where in the bible does it mention that a woman's skirt length should be three inches below the knee? Or where does it mention the acceptable and unacceptable styles of a mans jacket?

The argument that the bible gives us the principle just doesn't wash.  The principle can be used to show that extremes of dress are not appropriate in the Kingdom Hall or in field service but there is a mighty jump from extremes to some old, middle class, men deciding to impose their personal tastes on a hugely diverse group of people.

What's next; Uniforms for the men and burkas for the women?
