District Conventions - Here come the hotties
Once a year Witnesses hold a district convention, an assembly that is normally held in a sports stadium or large arena. Thousands of Witnesses from the local areas converge on the convention site for three days of instruction. The program is usually a series of tedious talks with the occasional gem when a genuinely interesting speaker is given a chance.
However, as much as the society would rather the program be the highlight the truth is that for most Witnesses it's the dinner break that holds the real appeal. It's a chance for catching up with old friends and for the unmarried (as well as quite a few of the married) it's flirt city. It's amusing watching all those sexual frustrations being revved up as the women eye the men in their sharp suits and the men try not to be too obvious as their eyes linger over the array of attractive females.
If you have had anything more than passing dealings with JW's you will know that they have strange and unhealthy views regarding boyfriend / girlfriend relationships. Their stance is that dating is not acceptable unless the individuals have a serious intention to marry. Sex before marriage is strictly forbidden and divorce is also not allowed except in extreme circumstances. Therefore you have a situation where many JW's marry very young to the first person they have ever dated and then, as is often the case, they realise they have made a mistake from which they cannot extricate themselves.
The organisation claims that God created man and yet they ignore the fact that as part of that creation process he provided post pubescents with a powerful sex drive. If his intention was life long monogamy for all humans why provide that powerful desire before they are emotionally capable of long term commitment?
Inevitably this ridiculously narrow minded stance leads to tens of thousands of young Witnesses being disfellowshipped (shunned) for immorality and far more marriage breakdowns than they would care to admit. As for those that stay married there are a good proportion that live a loveless and joyless life.
Don't misunderstand me, there are many Witness marriages that are happy and strong but if you listen to their rhetoric you would believe that they have an almost perfect record of marriages that last because of their grounding in Gods principles and morals. The reality is that their puritanical stance results in many unwise unions and traps those that realise that they and their selected partner are incompatible.
So many of those marriages start with the flicker of eyelashes at a district convention.
