Dying and Lying




My parents are not in the best of health and are in the twilight of their lives.  They have both spent their entire lives in the service of Jehovahs Witnesses, giving both time and money along the way. They have both remained loyal, faithful and hardworking members of the congregation and the sad fact is they will probably both go to their graves believing the lies they have been told.

Sooner or later one or even both of them will need nursing care.  They may develop alzheimer's, cancer or dementia, they could suffer a stroke or heart attack or just become too weak and tired to care for themselves.  Will the Governing Body look after them?  Will they pay for their care?  Will they even send them a message of support as they lay bed - ridden?

Or will they turn a blind eye as the 'shunned' family members look after them in the final years, months and weeks of their life?

And afterwards - when the 'shunned' family members have made that sacrifice - will the Governing Body allow them to say a few words about their mum or dad from the platform at the funeral?

NO

Will they send a representative from the Governing Body to pay respect to a long-standing and loyal member?

NO

Will they even send an official representative from the Branch office?

NO

But will they accept the proceeds of the Will that has been bequeathed to them by the loyal servant whom they have mislead and fooled for their entire life?

OH YES.

If the family contest it will the Society fight for those funds?

OH YES.

Don't get me wrong, my parents worldly goods are of no concern to me.  I just wish some deserving organisation could benefit from their Will.  Any charity that helps in the fight against mental health, dementia, cancer, poverty, injustice, segregation, child cruelty and the thousands of other real issues.

Instead it will go to Jehovahs Witnesses who will use it to fight our legal systems attempts to uncover the complete truth behind the child abuse scandal that is exploding around them.  It will be used to publish yet more propaganda in countless languages, painting the organisation as loving, happy and directed by God, whereas the reality is it's dishonest, dividing and clearly directed by self-grandiose men with a love of their own self-importance.

A part of me wishes I could grab my parents by the lapels and shake them awake.  But another part of me realises that a sudden realisation on their part that they have wasted their entire lives would be almost impossible to take.  Letting them die in ignorance is the kindest thing to do - no matter how hard that is for their children and grandchildren.

I imagine - in fact I hope - that the young men who blow themselves up in the name of Islam in an effort to kill innocent bystanders - realise at the last moment that the promise of spending eternity with umpteen virgins in heaven is probably true.  The virgins stay virgins for all eternity!

For my parents I hope they believe in the resurrection right to the very end.  After they're gone they won't know it was a lie anyway.

Aerosmith and Us

I've recently joined an ex-JW Facebook group and some of the people who contribute to it have made me realise just what a journey it is leaving the Organisation.  As you read their experiences and their (often) open-hearted pleas I am constantly reminded that all of them, in some way or another, are echoing my own feelings and experiences. There is a lyric in the wonderful Aerosmith song 'Amazing' that says; Life's a journey not a destination .  It is a sentiment that until recently I never truly understood but now I realise that leaving a religion that has controlled and manipulated you for a lifetime is a journey that never really ends but it can be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling if you allow it to be. What's the point of the Memorial?

It's memorial season again and most of us will get an invite.  To JW's it is viewed as the most important meeting of the year and effectively it is the only celebration that they actively encourage. Witnesses view the memorial as a celebration and as kids growing up in the 'truth' we were taught the significance of the emblems and the importance of the ransom sacrifice.  However, from being a youngster, I have always questioned the whole concept of both the memorial and (apostasy alert) more to the point, the reasoning behind Jesus ransom sacrifice.  Here is the basic premise of the memorial;  It's a formal ceremony that acknowledges the sacrifice of a perfect man, Jesus.
