Fudging your Hours

Do you remember going on field service?  Counting hours, magazines, books, return visits and bible studies?  Today I walked up to one of the city centre stands that JW's occupy.  There were at least five Witnesses talking amongst themselves so I decided to hover for a while and see what happened. Interestingly none of them approached me.  So I took a Watchtower out of the stand and looked at it for a while.  Still nobody approached me though tat least one was looking in my direction.

Finally I took a Watchtower and walked away - still not a single Witness showed any interest in me.

The episode didn't surprise me in the least because I have observed these stands in cities as diverse as Prague, Edinburgh, Majorca, Sheffield and Berlin.  It is a time counting exercise and nothing more to the 'pioneers' that man the stands.  At the end of the day (or more accurately their shift) they count how many magazines and books have been taken and add them to their field service report.  Sooner or later they are paraded on the Kingdom Hall platform and paraded as an example to the congregation of how exemplary their ministry is.

The Witnesses in Sheffield were so busy talking amongst themselves that anyone truly interested in their message would have been completely disillusioned by the disinterest.

But that is the field ministry.  The city / town centre stands are a huge cop-out, enabling pioneers to count hours and hours of unproductive time on their reports.  Very few of us wanted to knock on doors for hour after hour in order to gain our pioneer hours.  Most of us hated it and we tried every trick in the book to avoid it - including walking miles between 'calls', spending hours with the return visits who just wanted our company and even falsifying our reports.

Of course if those Witnesses in Sheffield truly believed in their religion they would have approached me like a lifeguard rushing to a drowning man.  They would have snatched at the slightest sign of interest and done their absolute best to save me from Jehovahs murderous intent.  But they didn't show the slightest care in the world.  Why?  Because they don't really believe it.  To them them the religion is a social club - it's where all their friends and families go.  If that wasn't the case they would actively promote their beliefs to anyone who shows an interest at their stands - but they don't.

I wanted to approach them and see if they really knew what their Governing Body were hiding from them but of course it would be pointless.  They are taught to ignore anything from anyone who is not linked into the organisation.

Back in the forties there was a huge split in the religion between those that wanted to engage in house to house ministry and those that didn't.  It seems as though those that left the organisation because they didn't want to preach door to door should have waited for these city / town stands because their reluctance to preach would have been realised.

Why is it that so few people talk to the Witnesses who man these stands?

Because so few people want to listen to bullshit!!
