Hiding Behind a Sound Bite

Another day gone and still no Armageddon.  The stomp of military boots echoing off the pavement as squads of armed police round up all the Witnesses is strangely absent.  (If you've seen their recent video's you'll understand)  The clamour to ban all religions isn't even a whisper.  As for throwing money into the streets - well the pound has weakened since Brexit but there's no evidence that it's so worthless people are throwing it away.

For my entire life (and for a long time before I was born) Jehovahs Witnesses have been declaring that Armageddon is 'just around the corner' or 'right in front of us!'

When it's pointed out that they have been saying this for over a hundred years they role out the spiritual Elastoplast of; 'a day to Jehovah is as a thousand years to man.'  And that sound bite is a prime example of how Witnesses deal with awkward questions about their beliefs.  When they don't have an adequate answer they always have an 'adequate' phrase to explain away their lack of an answer.  Or, when their actions are questionable they have a well rehearsed saying that somehow gives them justification.

Other examples of this include:

  • 'The light is getting brighter' rather than; 'actually we got it wrong last time'.

  • 'You look at things from a worldly perspective but we see things from God's' rather than; 'You're right, the practice of shunning someone simply because they no longer share our beliefs is cruel and divisive.'

  • 'It's simply a malicious attack by Satan' rather than; 'Yes, we clearly have a problem with our processes in dealing with child abuse allegations.'

  • 'JW woman appreciate the arrangement of headship' rather than; 'Women in the Organisation are not given any choice but to accept the chauvinistic dictates of their male leaders.'

  • 'Jehovah's Holy Spirit is perfect but has to work through imperfect men' rather than; 'They got it wrong AGAIN!'

  • 'We demonstrate loyalty to Jehovah by refusing to read and listen to the views of worldly detractors' rather than; 'We stick our fingers in our ears, squeeze our eyes closed and hum loudly rather than face the real truth.'

  • 'Jehovahs Great Day of Armageddon' rather than; 'The day God commits the largest single act of mass murder in history.'

  • 'We don't pick and choose what we want to believe in the Bible, we accept it all as Gods word' rather than; 'We don't pick and choose what we are told to believe by the Governing Body, even when it's clearly wrong.'

There are plenty more of these little 'sticking plaster' phrases that the Governing Body drum into their followers in order to hide their inadequacies in plain sight.

In the year 2116 JW's will likely still be declaring that a thousand years is just a day to God and we need to be patient and loyal to him. Armageddon will be within touching distance (still). The 1914 generation will have been long forgotten as the brightening light will have revealed a change of thought to the 'forty weeks of years' understanding.   Black pudding will be on the Bethel menu because a new understanding regarding blood was proposed by a Governing Body member who was partial to a British fried breakfast.  The preaching work will involve mass Watchtower pop-ups on social media platforms.  Brothers will buy their suits from JW.ORG/THEELDERSHOP and sisters will form a new element within the congregations that teaches their daughters how to cook, clean and subdue their sense of worthlessness.  JW.TV will rake in trillions and the Governing Body will continue to enjoy their rockstar lifestyles.

But don't worry because it will all still be directed by Holy Spirit!
