We Don't Want Good Causes to Receive our Money!

JW.ORG are running an article entitled;

Jehovah’s Witnesses Help to Beautify Rostov-on-Don

On May 20, 2015, the head of administration of southern Russia’s largest city, Rostov-on-Don, issued a letter of gratitude to Jehovah’s Witnesses, commending them “for very active participation in the springtime beautification of the city.”

The article describes how local JW's from four congregations helped with clearing rubbish from city pathways and riverbanks around the Russian city of Rostov.  At first glance it seems an innocent enough piece of editorial and lets be honest, highly commendable.  Of course the cynical side of me wants to believe that the Witnesses in Russia are looking for ways to generate positive publicity because they have experienced years of bad press and anti-Witness sentiments.

My main reason for this cynical view is that in forty years of being a part of the Organisation I never once saw or heard of any group of Witnesses actively joining in with the local community to do do anything.  In fact the very opposite was true.  I used to ask my parents why they didn't give a few pence to the homeless people or send donations to LiveAid or disaster zones.  The reply was always the same; We have the long term solution to their problems so it is better to give them the 'truth' than money which will only provide them with very short term help!

Even as a kid I realised that was just a load of b*ll*cks!  Why can't you give them both?  I asked once.  Their answer;  Our money is better used by Jehovahs Organisation to spread the good news of Jehovahs Kingdom.

The thing is, could you imagine Jesus walking past a homeless person and simply offering them a bible study or a Watchtower?  Could you imagine the son of God watching a terrible famine in Africa and dismissing the pleas for aid because it wouldn't provide a permanent solution?

So why do Jehovahs Witnesses think that they can ignore these people who need help now?  At this point I must stress that there are individual Witnesses who do contribute to disaster areas and homeless people and other worthy causes.  However, the Organisation itself has never, in my experience, encouraged it's members to contribute their funds or time to any cause other than their own.

Why?  Jesus would have done it.

There is another possible explanation for the Witnesses in Rostov giving their time and efforts to help the city, an explanation that is less cynical but equally damning of their Governing Body.  Maybe someone within one of those four congregations considered what Jesus would have done and realised he would have got stuck in and helped his local community.  Maybe that Witness managed to reach the hearts of her or his fellow brothers and sisters and convince them that they should follow Jesus example and get stuck in to the work that the community would benefit from.

One thing is for certain, the Governing Body of Jehovahs Witnesses happily used the publicity to promote their religion but they won't encourage their members to act like Jesus when it comes to engaging and donating to local communities.  Why?  Every penny sent to a worthwhile cause is a penny the Governing Body will not recieve - and they will never encourage that!
